NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Bishop Shanahan 2017 midfielder Samuel Goforth said confidence was the key to his success Saturday at the Philly Showcase at Episcopal Academy
“When it comes to all these great players you just have confidence and believe in yourself,” said Goforth, who was named the 2017 MVP for scoring the most points in the morning session. “When you are dodging you have to go hard to try and get that goal in.
“Over this fall I have developed that mindset and I (plan) to bring it back to my team this spring.”
Saturday’s Philly Showcase, run by NXTsports Showcasse Lacrosse, drew more than 125 college coaches. Below are four players that shined in the Showcase and the Fab 40 All-Star Games. Click here for Sunday’s story on the 2016 MVP and other All-Stars that shined.
Samuel Goforth, Bishop Shanahan, Pa., 2017 midfielder/FO, Freedom Lacrosse
Q. What were your goals for the day/tournament?
Goforth: “I knew the competition was going to be great today so I came out here trying to play my hardest, go in fast and obviously get a couple goals every game.”
Q. What did you think of the competition?
Goforth: “The competition out here is the best. It’s the best players in the country and we’re all going fast, which just makes it great.”
Q. What are you looking for in a college and in a program?
Goforth: “I want to get to a D-I school but I want a school with great academics where I can be for four years.”
Other All-Stars that shined Saturday:
James Sanderson, Middlesex, MA, 2017 Midfielder, Laxachusetts
Q. What was the competition like out there today?
Sanderson: “It was definitely high out there, a lot of great defenders, a lot of guys that can move the ball. Everyone was playing really fast.”
Q. What were your goals for the day/tournament?
Sanderson: “Definitely get some goals, and as a defender stop the ball and get some ground balls.”
Q. What did you learn about yourself that you can bring back to your team in the spring?
Sanderson: “To never really give up on the dodge.”
Q. What are you looking for in a college and a program?
Sanderson:“Right now I am looking at D-III schools; a great education is the first priority, and a great coach.”
Jackson Herrick, University School, CA, 2016 attackman, Alcatraz Outlaws
Q. What did you think of the weather for today being from California?
A. It’s a lot colder than at back home, it’s about 65 degrees and sunny at home but it turned out alright. (Said with huge smile and laugh).”
Q. What were you expecting from the competition?
Herrick: “I was expecting nothing but the best and I think that’s what was out here. It raised my level and everyone else around me.”
Q. What were the goals you set for yourself today?
Herrick: “Making the All-Star game and that was goal accomplished.
Q. What did you learn from this All-Star game and tournament?
Herrick: “Have an aggressive attitude and let it rip when the chances come.”
Q. What are you looking for in a college and a program?
Herrick: “Top academics and that’s my main concern.”
Stephen Hogan, Central Bucks West, PA, 2016 Goalie, Bucks Select
Q. What did you think of the competition today?
Hogan: “I thought it was great competition, I thought the tournament was really well run, lots of great fun, and a lot of great players. It was a really good day.”
Q. What were your goals in the All-Star game?
Hogan: “Every time I get in the goal I just think be you and just play your heart out.
Q. What did you learn about yourself today that you can bring back to your team in the spring?
Hogan: “I am good defensive leader and I can lead my team well.”
Q. Where do you stand in your college search? What are you looking for?
Hogan: “I am looking for a college with a great criminal justice program.”
