From US Lacrosse

US Lacrosse announces Larsen Bidstrup of Byfield, Massachusetts and William Hudson of Atlanta, Georgia as the recipients of 2015 Michael Breschi Scholarships.US-lacrosse1

Established in 2007 to honor the life and memory of Michael Breschi, son of University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse head coach, Joe Breschi, the scholarships are awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college and are the son or daughter of a coach who serves as a full-time employee of an educational institution. Criteria considered include academic qualifications, extracurricular activities, internships, community service and employment experience. US Lacrosse administers the scholarships, with winners selected annually by the Breschi family.

Bidstrup is a 2015 graduate of The Governor’s Academy in Byfield and is attending Harvard University, where he will be a member of the men’s lacrosse team. The academic dean at Governor’s Academy describes Bidstrup as a talented and thoughtful young man.

“Larsen is kind and polite and always ready to have fun and be involved with the community,” said Dean Elaine White. “While he is an intense competitor on the field, there is not much that riles him off the field. He is often a peacemaker among his friends, the one who can talk a buddy down after a fight with a girlfriend, or the one who knows when the teasing crosses the line. He has a good head and a kind heart.”

Hudson is a 2015 graduate of The Westminster School in Atlanta and will be playing lacrosse at College of Holy Cross. One of his advisors at Westminster says that he is mature, enthusiastic and a positive leader.

“William is committed to all aspects of his school and community,” writes David Drake in his letter of recommendation. “His enthusiasm for task encourages other students to raise their level of involvement in any project. I have watched his positive presence with his classmates. He commands the respect of all who know him, and he possesses integrity of the highest order.”

“On behalf of my wife Julie and four beautiful daughters, we are thrilled with this year’s recipients of the Michael Breschi scholarship,” Joe Breschi said. “We want to thank all the applicants who shared their personal stories with us and for US Lacrosse for continuing to keep our son Michael’s memory alive. William and Larsen personify the type of people we would have wanted Michael to be around. They are two young men of great faith and perseverance who have worked hard to achieve excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field. We wish both William and Larsen tremendous success on their journey through college the next four years.”

“US Lacrosse would like to extend its best wishes to William at Holy Cross and to Larsen at Harvard,” said Ann Carpenetti, vice president of lacrosse operations at US Lacrosse. “Both of these young men have outstanding credentials, and both have exciting futures ahead of them. US Lacrosse is honored to work with Coach Breschi and his family in awarding this scholarship to exemplary student athletes such as these.”

From US Lacrosse

US Lacrosse today announced that 110 teams and organizations have been selected as recipients of 2015 First Stick Program grants. US Lacrosse will partner with these programs over the next two years to provide comprehensive resources, including equipment, US Lacrosse membership and coaches education training, to assist them in becoming self-sustaining programs that operate by US Lacrosse’s national standards and best practices.US-lacrosse1

Boys’ programs received 73 grant awards and girls’ programs were awarded 37 grants. The recipients represent 36 different states. This national US Lacrosse initiative is designed to assist new and developing youth and high school lacrosse teams nationwide.

“We congratulate each of these recipients because there was a very strong applicant pool once again and a very competitive selection process for the First Stick Program,” said Meghan Chaplick, senior manager for programs at US Lacrosse. “We look forward to partnering with these teams and organizations, and supporting them with developmental resources to help them become self-sustaining programs.”

Applicant groups are required to demonstrate a financial need and verify their status as a community based youth team or organization, or an elementary, middle or high school team in order to be considered. One of First Stick’s primary goals is to help break down the barriers to participation by providing free and/or discounted resources to new teams.

The First Stick Program is a US Lacrosse initiative supported by many of the nation’s leading manufacturers, distributors and retailers of lacrosse equipment. To see the full list of supporters, or to read more about the program, please visit uslacrosse.org/FirstStick.

US Lacrosse, the national governing body of men’s and women’s lacrosse, announced today that the organization has awarded 29 new grants to encourage and empower lacrosse participation in underrepresented communities.
