Will Frisoli didn’t have to go far to get feedback about the Philly Freshman Showcase.Freshman showcase

This weekend marks the event’s third year, and in that short time, it has already established itself as the top recruiting event for freshmen across the country. It’s the destination for freshmen to prove themselves against their elite peers every fall. Frisoli just went up to his brother and asked him about it.

“My brother, Jack, did it two years ago and said it was really unbelievable to see the amount of coaches there,” said Frisoli, an LSM at St. Sebastian’s (Mass.) and Laxachusetts. “After that is when he said coaches really started to talk to him. He said it’s going to be the best players, which is really exciting. It’s fun to think that

“I can get out there and compete against the best.”

Frisoli’s lacrosse bloodlines are strong. Jack is committed to Harvard, while his cousin is Sean Morris, who played professionally and founded the Laxachusetts club after a strong career at UMass. The younger Frisoli has had advantages to help craft his game that few others can boast of.

“Sean’s always been a great role model for me,” Frisoli said. “He’s given me advice on and off the field. Going against my brother a lot gives me an advantage when I’m going up against other middies. He really helps me see what middies do, which gives me a leg up on the competition.”

Conor Calderone said there is no time to get down when competing in a King of the X face-off tournament.

Conor Calderone (Smithtown West, Laxachusetts)( is honored as King of the X champion by Showcase Lacrosse Director Brett Manney

“You’ve got to take one face-off at a time and have a quick memory if you lose,” said the 2019 FOGO from Smithtown West (NY) and Laxachusetts who has committed to Maryland. “I have the confidence. You can’t get too high or too low.”

That positive attitude paid off Saturday for Calderone when he ousted Long Island rival and friend Tyler Sandoval for the King of the X title at United Sports in the NXT Showcase Nike Philly Freshman Showcase.

“I cam in wanting to win,” said Calderone. “We’re good friends. He’s good; he’s quick and has a powerful clamp. I tried to be a little quicker and pull it out and go win the 50-50s.”

Calderone enjoyed being in the spotlight since the event was showcased in front of the entire crowd and a large group of college coaches.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Calderone. “I think I have to learn to play under pressure. Everyone is watching, but it’s just a game; you go and have fun.”

Others who shined from Saturday’s Fab 40 All-Star Game and Morning Session:

Morning Session MVP Lance Tillman, ATT, Valor Christian (CO), FCA

Morning Session MVP Lance Tillman, ATT, Valor Christian (CO), FCA

Morning Session MVP Lance Tillman, ATT, Valor Christian (CO), FCA

How was the competition and how did you adjust your game?
Tillman:
“The competition was crazy. I didn’t erxpect this (MVP), this was one of the best showcases I haveever played in. I just tried to hustle, get the GBs and work off ball.”

What did you learn from the event that will help you moving forward?
Tillman:
“Probably that GBs is the most important thing.”

How did you deal with the pressure of the presence of so many college coaches?
Tillman:
“You try to block it out. It’s in your conscience so you’ve got to try your hardest.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Tillman:
“I am mostly looking at the school. Lacrosse matters, but I want to get an education.”

What helped you gain the MVP award?
Tillman:
“I meshed pretty well with the other attackmen in my team. We knew what we had to do and we did it.”

Runner-Up to Morning Session MVP Alex Slusher, ATT, Oregon Episcopal (OR), 3D (3 goals in Fab 40 game)

Runner-Up to Morning Session MVP Alex Slusher, ATT, Oregon Episcopal (OR), 3D

Runner-Up to Morning Session MVP Alex Slusher, ATT, Oregon Episcopal (OR), 3D

How was the competition and how did you adjust your game?
Slusher:
“This is the best competition I have gone against in my life. Being from Oregon I don’t get great competition like this, especially in the Fab 40 game. I love playing lacrosse, especially when you get this type of competition.”

What went well for you today?
Slusher:
“I definitely think my athleticism helped me. You have to get good shots because these goalies obviously are very good as well.”

What did you learn from the event that will help you moving forward?
Slusher:
“I have to put more time on the wall. I have to get my stick skills up; I have athleticism, but here everyone has great stick skills and I don’t want to lag behind.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Slusher
: “I am looking for great academics and a great lacrosse school as well as a school with a good social aspect. But the school is the important thing. You play lacrosse for four years, but you are a graduate of a college for 60 years.”

Scott Bower, DEF, Episcopal Texas, Mustangs/3D, committed to UVA

Scott Bower, DEF, Episcopal Texas, Mustangs, committed to UVA

Scott Bower, DEF, Episcopal Texas, Mustangs, committed to UVA

How was the competition and how did you adjust your game?
Bower:
“It was really good competition, the best I’ve played against probably. I had to play a more slow paced defense and not go for the heavy checks; be patient and play good, fundamentally sound defense. They (the attackmen) were really good; some were big, physical guys and others were quick. They had it all.”

What did you learn from the event that will help you moving forward?
Bower:
“Just how to play against certain types of kids; you have the big physical kids, and they are different than the small quicker kids. You have to know your opponent and how to play against them.”

What made you decide to come to the Philly Showcase?
Bower
(who is 6-2 and also plays football): “With football it’s hard to get to showcases during the football seaosn season. My football season ended two weeks ago: I went to the Philly Showcase last year and played as an 8th grader in the Sunday Tournament. I saw the talent and wanted to come back this year.”

MVP Second Runner-Up Peter Davies, ATT, Dover Sherborn (MA), Laxachusetts

MVP Second Runner-Up Peter Davies, ATT, Dover Sherborn (MA), Laxachusetts

MVP Second Runner-Up Peter Davies, ATT, Dover Sherborn (MA), Laxachusetts

How was the competition and how did you adjust your game?
Davies:
“The competition was so high. Everybody was moving the ball so fast. It was a great (Fab 40) game. It was played at a high level; probably all these kids will play college somewhere. Everybody was tired. We played played three games and in the fourth everybody stepped up and played their hardest.”

What did you learn from the event that will help you moving forward?
Davies:
“I need to hit the gym all the time and get bigger and stronger and also work on my stick skills, running and fitness.”

What made you decide to come to the Philly Showcase?
Davies:
“My brother is going to play at Richmond and I have always looked up to him all my life. I played lax with him in the backyard and I wanted to get better and be the best I can.”

Hunter Jaronski, DEF, Academy of the New Church (PA), Duke’s LC

Hunter Jaronski, DEF, Academy of the New Church (PA), Duke's LC

Hunter Jaronski, DEF, Academy of the New Church (PA), Duke’s LC

How was the competition and how did you adjust your game?
Jaronski:
“It was great competition out here. It was an unbelievable opportunity. You had to stay on their hands and keep moving with them. It was really hard, but it was fun.”

What went well for your today?
Jaronski:
“I think my communication was strong; calling out slides and who’s hot. I was really working and making sure everybody knew what they were doing. We got a couple stops, we tried to stop the great offensive players, which was tough to do.”

What did you learn from the event that will help you moving forward?
Jaronski:
“I learned to play in big opportunities against great people. You have to always be moving your feet. You get better by playing guys that are the best from across the country.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Jaronski:
“I want a college with both great academics and lacrosse so I can enjoy my four years; and I want to be close to home.”

What were your goals coming in?
Jaronski:
“You always want to play to your best ability and you just want to have fun. If you think too much, you get yourself in situations. You need to play fast and just react.”

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Here is our look at 10 Players who Shined Saturday in the Class of 2017 at the Boys Philly Showcase at Episcopal Academy.

MF and 2017 MVP Nick Rockefeller (Harrison, LB3 ATL)

MF and 2017 MVP Nick Rockefeller (Harrison, LB3 ATL)

Henry Weld, Duxbury (MA), Goalie, Laxachusetts, The Laxachusetts players did well this past weekend at both Philly Showcases, most notably Weld who stood out in the Fab 4O game. The Duxbury junior made some keys saves and he moves his feet well around the crease. Weld has a good quick catch and then release to begin the clear.

Max Brooks, Hamilton Southeastern (IN), Attack, Mad Cats, Brooks did a nice job on attack during the morning session games and the Fab 40 game on Saturday. Showed tremendous upside for the junior out of Indiana. Brooks has a great shot on cage and he dodges well.

Tyler Ward, Severna Park (MD), Defense, 3D, Ward was impressive on Saturday. The Severna Park junior had some great checks and got to some key groundballs in the Fab 40 game. Love the way he’s patient and doesn’t panic on the clears.

Nick Rockefeller, Harrison (GA) Midfielder, Morning MVP, Rockefeller moves well and has good field sense. The Harrison junior hustled and he has quick hands. Loved this kids LAX I.Q.

Will Burckley, Ridge (NJ), Attack, Building Blocks Elite, Burckley is another kid with a strong upside and is a gritty type of a player. The junior from Ridge had a nice goal in one of the morning session games.

Niko Gekas, Roswell (GA), Attack, LB3, Gekas is a fun player to watch play the game. He shoots the ball well and he has good footwork. It will be interesting to see where the junior from Georgia will land. He has talent to be a top Division I player.

Connor Ringwalt, Episcopal Academy (PA), Attack, NXT, Ringwalt did well playing on his home turf. The junior has all the tools to be a star. Showed he can shoot the ball on the run with both hands and is a leader out on the lacrosse field. Another player that is fun to watch play the game.

Ethan Black Fernandes, Trinity Pawling (NY), of Ontario Defense, Blackwolf, Fernendez is a tough player who loves playing his position. Good footwork, solid checking, and Fernandez gets the ball up the field without any problem on the clear. Love how this kid plays.

Quinn Amato, Naperville Central (Ill.) Defense, NXT Chicago, Amato is a beast. He’s another kid that does a great job of getting to the groundballs and moving up the field with it. Illinois is a growing area that is doing a magnificent job of developing talent.

Jensen Corabi, Half Hollow Hills East (NY), Midfield, Team 91, Corabi is an energizer bunny out there on the lacrosse field. He just keeps going 100%. Love the footwork and the conditioning with Corabi. The Team 91 should carry over a terrific fall season into the spring season for the Colts.

Collin Almeida was not sure how’d he fare last weekend at the Philly Freshman Showcase – after all, he was still recovering from a torn hamstring suffered a month ago while playing quarterback for Falmouth’s varsity football team in Massachusetts.

Laxaachusetts All-Stars, from left, Will Frisoli, Collin Almeida, Peter Blake, Henry Rentz, Peter Davies, Conor Calderone and Konrad Knaus

Laxaachusetts All-Stars, from left, Will Frisoli, Collin Almeida, Peter Blake, Henry Rentz, Peter Davies, Conor Calderone (King of the X champion) and Konrad Knaus

But the heady attackman appeared as healthy as ever by being chosen for the prestigious Fab 40 team and scoring two goals and dishing an assist for the Green All-Star team. Almeida was one of six from Laxachusetts to make the Fab 40 team and also was instrumental in helping Laxachusetts finish 3-0 Sunday in the Showcase Invitational.

“I think this weekend was a great success for our team and the players that participated in the fab 40 All-Star Game,” said Almeida. “We are very fortunate that we had six players in the all star game and we attribute that to the quality of competition we played throughout the summer and fall.”

Almeida’s Fall was most notable. He was the backup quarterback at Falmouth, but was thrust into the starting lineup due to injury and led his team to a key victory over Sandwich. His team reached the second round of the playoffs.

Other Fab 40 All-Stars were Will Frisoli (LSM, St. Sebastian’s, MA), Peter Blake (DEF, St. Sebastian’s), Henry Rentz (MF, Thayer Academy, MA), Peter Davies (ATT, Dover Sherborn, MA), and Konrad Knaus (ATT, Sandwich, MA). Also, Conor Calderone (Smithtown East, NY) won the King of the X championship.

“Many things contributed to our success as a team this weekend; one being the unbelievable coaching staff that we have at Laxachusetts,” said Almeida. “We wanted to focus more on moving the ball around the perimeter as opposed to having one guy go to the cage.

“This helped us tremendously in playing as a team. It was really great to see what we could do when we shared the ball. Another thing that contributed to our success is the aggressiveness that we have. We all know going into any game no matter who we play it is going to be a battle. I think our team is ready for anything.”

Almeida felt he met his goals for the weekend.

“My goals for the weekend were to play to my fullest potential, and to try my hardest every single time I stepped onto the field.,” he said. “(Having had) a torn hamstring throughout the whole fall, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

“I think I played to the best of my ability in both the individual and team showcase. I also made the fab 40 All-Star game which I was very honored to make because that was the toughest competition I have played against to date.”

Laxachusetts coach Sean Morris said his players have emerged as an elite group. He also wanted to credit his goalies, Devin Barney and Mason Fitzgerald; and LSMs, Dylan Gardner and Frisoli.

“This group is very talented,” said Morris, who noted that the team was without another standout goalie, Mac Fotiades. “This is one of our first classes that started with our youth program. They have come all the way through and been together for a while. Top to bottom, they are very strong.”

Lacrosse world mourns loss of Bruce Lerch II, @bostonlaxnet Editor & popular Massachusetts lax writer

From BostonLax.Net

From American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother of War, by Thomas Vennum, Jr:

Lacrosse was also played as part of funeral and memorial ceremonies… Truman Michelson, who wrote extensively on the culture of the Fox, elucidated Fox practices on “what they do, and how they pray, when there is death… they would play ball… They used lacrosse sticks. It is as if they were playing with [the deceased] for the last time, so it is said. This is how it is when they play ball.”bruce 27

Our lacrosse community has been shaken by the loss of Bostonlax.Net Editor and popular lacrosse writer Bruce Lerch, and as colleagues, coaches, and players have been telling stories and remembering him, one thing keeps ringing true: he loved a good game!

In that spirit, there’s no better way to honor Bruce than with a send-off that helps us all come together to celebrate his life and to acknowledge his place in our sport.

Pick-up games to remember Bruce will start at 12:30pm this Sunday, December 13th on the turf fields at Waltham High School, 617 Lexington Street, Waltham MA 02452.

Everyone is welcome—to play, to have a catch, to be a fan, or to just tell a story. It will be a great tribute to him and the game he loved.

Bruce often brought our community together through his observations and words, and while doing so, turned unheard of players into stars. He did it humbly, and never made it about himself. This time, though, it’s all about Bruce—a man whose passion and energy made lacrosse better around here. This time, Bruce will be the star.

About another memorial game he attended, @blerch27, himself, said on Twitter, “This might be the most epic pickup lax game in the history of ever… little guys, HS and college players… unreal!”

Bring your gear, your friends, and your memories. This should be a lot of fun, and we know he’ll be watching.

Visiting hours for Bruce Frederick Lerch II of Franklin, 42, editor of BostonLax.Net and a Boston Herald sports writer, who died Sunday at Milford Regional Medical Center will be tonight.

Visiting Hours – Friday, December 11th from 4-8pm in The RJ Ross Funeral Home, 135 South Street, Wrentham MA 02093

The Bruce Lerch Memorial Scholarship Fund is accepting donations at www.youcaring.com/thebrucefund, both from individuals, and from teams looking to participate in the helmet decal campaign.

Born in Milford, Mr. Lerch was a graduate of Mount Saint Charles High School in Woonsocket, R.I. He received his bachelor’s degree from Daniel Webster College and his master’s degree in journalism from Emerson College.

Mr. Lerch is survived by his parents, Bruce F. of Franklin and Carol M. (Hennessey) of Plainville; two sisters, Kelly Flanagan and her husband, Wayne, of Bellingham, and Jamie Lerch-Ebner and her wife, Anne-Marie Ebner, of New York City; his grandmother, Esther, of Doylestown, Pa.; and numerous cousins and aunts.

Funeral services and burial will be private.
